About

The materials on this site are from the archives of the Thomas Jefferson Foundation held by the Jefferson Library and from other Foundation departments, such as Restoration.

The Jefferson Library is a gateway to information on Thomas Jefferson, Monticello, the people who lived and were enslaved on this and other Jefferson-related sites, and their legacy.

We will be adding new collections and materials to this site as we digitize more of our holdings.

The search bar at the top of every page offers a general keyword search. Note that if you search for two or more words, your search results will include all  records that have ANY of your search terms or words.

Advanced Search

With advanced search, you can search specific phrases and fields, and you can narrow your search by date or using specific categories.

When using the advanced search fields, be aware that you can use the terms AND, OR and NOT between keywords.

For example:

  • To get results that include both "Jefferson" and "Monticello", use AND between terms.
  • To get results that have either "Jefferson", "Monticello", or both, add OR between terms.
  • To get results in which "Jefferson" appears, but do not have "Monticello" in them, add NOT between terms.

Advanced search text fields with entries for "Jefferson" and "Monticello" joined by "AND"

You can access advanced search using the link under the search bar at the top of every page.

You can use the options on browse and search result pages to narrow down the results.

Filter results options with 3 choices for Monticello Location, none selected

The number in a circle next to each filter title shows how many options you have selected for that category. The number at the right-hand side, next to the toggle arrow, shows how many total options there are for each category.

Use the toggle arrow to open or close each category. Be aware that you may have to scroll if the category has a large number of options.

Once you have set the filters you want, click the apply button (at the top and bottom of the interface).
